Abstract: Background and objective: The most important objective of community based participatory research is capacity building for data collecting, organizing and exploiting in order to solve local problems. Farokhshahr population lab located in Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari province, Iran, established under supervision of Shahrekord University of medical sciences in 2004, focused on people empowerment to identify and solve their problems in a developmental manner and promoting people health. In this population lab, running participatory researches is a fundamental fact that consists of community mobilization, needs assessment, priority setting, interventions and evaluation. Following community mobilization in Farokhshahr, needs assessment was performed. Survey method: this is a community based participatory research (CBPR) in which study population consisted of all 45000 Farokhshahr residents. Sample size was 40 groups and each group included 6-12 members. These 400 persons were selected via stratified random sampling. In this study, Rapid appraisal method which based on 3 stages: Observation, interview with different groups of people and data gathering from the region, was used for needs assessment. Findings : According to results derived from information gathering from community profile , focus group discussion(FGDs), observation and data recording ,40 different needs were detected which classified into 9 categories. Conclusion: results of this investigation lead to recognition of real local problems. These problems need to be subjected to priority setting.
